- Certain foods can affect our mood in different ways.
- A diet high in ultra-processed foods and refined carbohydrates has been linked to an increased risk of depression.
- On the other hand, a diet rich in whole grains and fermented fiber can improve gut health and lead to improved mood and reduced risk of mood disorders.
The relationship between food and mental health is a growing area of research. In fact, there is now a specialized branch of psychiatry known as "nutritional psychology" that focuses on the connection between eating habits, dietary factors, and mental health disorders.
According to registered dietitian Kristin Kirkpatrick, "the field of nutritional psychology has gained traction due to high-quality data linking food to beneficial or worsening mental health outcomes."
How Food Affects Mood
Research has shown that certain foods can have a negative impact on our mood and increase the risk of depression. For example, sweets and ultra-processed foods have been linked to inflammation, low fiber intake, and disruption of the gut microbiome.
"Studies show associations for multiple reasons, including but not limited to an increased risk of inflammation, high sugar / low fiber, which can negatively impact the microbiome, exclusion of antioxidant foods, [and the] inclusion of additives," Kirkpatrick notes.
Mood-Boosting Foods
While more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between food and mood, some experts believe that whole grains may have a positive effect on mental health. A plant-based Mediterranean diet has been associated with lower rates of depression and improved mood.
