U.S. Cancer Survival Rates Reach Historic High of 70%. Here's Why

**Cancer Survival Rates Reach Record High**

Cancer is no longer a death sentence. According to a recent report from the American Cancer Society (ACS), cancer survival rates have reached an all-time high in the United States.

The ACS credits this positive trend to advancements in precision treatment, expanded screening efforts, and declining tobacco use. Despite these improvements, certain populations continue to face higher rates of cancer-related deaths, including Native Americans, Black Americans, and rural communities.

**Breaking Down the Numbers**

Seventy percent of those diagnosed with cancer now survive for five or more years, compared to just 49% in the mid-1970s. Additionally, survival rates have increased significantly for historically deadly cancers:

  • Myeloma: 32% to 62%
  • Liver cancer: 7% to 22%
  • Lung cancer: 15% to 28%
**Key Factors Driving Progress**

The ACS attributes this progress to three key factors:

  1. Research-driven innovations in precision treatment and immunotherapy
  2. Expanded screening efforts for breast, cervical, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancers
  3. Decades of declining tobacco use
**The Future of Cancer Treatment**

The ACS report highlights the importance of continued research and innovation in cancer treatment. By understanding the cancer genome and harnessing the body's immune system to fight the disease, doctors are now able to target specific cancer mutations with greater accuracy.

**Screening for Lung Cancer: A Critical Issue**

While early detection through screening has improved survival rates for many cancers, lung cancer remains a critical issue. Only 19% of eligible Americans are screened for lung cancer, and current guidelines exclude a growing number of patients who may benefit from this life-saving test.
