The United States has seen a significant increase in measles cases over the past few years. In 2025, the country recorded its highest number of measles cases since 1992, with a total of 2,242 confirmed cases nationwide.

This surge in cases puts the U.S. at risk of losing its measles elimination status, which it has held since 2000. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is scheduled to evaluate U.S. measles data in 2026 and may revoke the country's exemption status if the trend continues.

The majority of cases have been reported in South Carolina, where 585 measles cases were confirmed between October 2025 and January 2026. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 171 measles cases in nine U.S. jurisdictions: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia.

Experts attribute the rise in measles cases to declining vaccination rates in the U.S. and high measles circulation globally. Dr. Nathan Lo, an assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University, notes that "measles cases were high in 2025 due to declining vaccination in the U.S. and high measles circulation globally."

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases on the planet, with people who contract it able to spread the virus to others before symptoms even appear.

What's Being Done?

The CDC and other health organizations are working to combat the spread of measles through vaccination efforts. However, experts warn that continued vaccination hesitancy and conflicting messaging from federal health officials may contribute to the ongoing trend of rising measles cases.

It's essential for individuals to stay informed about the risks of measles and take steps to protect themselves and their loved ones by staying up-to-date on recommended vaccinations.
